Spiritual splendor

On a frigid cold New Year's Day Daniel Thomas was baptized. Grandma Jo helped me dress Daniel in the Mescher family baptismal gown. It was made from Grandma Jo's wedding gown, then worn by her five children, her nine grandchildren and now her 13th great grandchild.

Fr. Carmelo presided in the historic chapel. Deacon Mike arrived early and turned up the heat. The sun was streaming through stained glass windows. Godparents Rich and Georgia were amazed how Daniel slept straight through the entire ceremony.

As mysterious as God is, Our Heavenly Father understands that we humans still cherish physical reminders of His promise. Of the many prayers and rituals (pouring water over baby's head, lighting a candle) for the sacrament, my favorite is the anointing with the chrism oil. For the remainder of the day I am drawn to the crown of baby's head and inhale the fragrance deeply. I take to heart that this child of mine is a beloved child of God.
