I wrote this poem in my English III / DE 102 Class after reading "Courage" by Anne Bradstreet.
My instructor encouraged us to create our own version of the free verse poem, based on a journal entry we had written the day before discussing our personal definition of courage.
“Courage”
Coryn Glafcke
I, a student of courage
Or wrestler, perhaps
I have struggled with my fears
And my fears bite back
Older worries, they fade
New ones spring up each day
Understanding is a game
Unknowing, I go and fight
Future times ahead
May paralyze me with dread
Still working, I emerge
Beauty is found in courage
Success or failure, never dread
Keep a clear mind and move ahead
Speak when you should,
And sometimes when you shouldn’t
The hardest part is to keep going.
Take time in the silence
You cannot always control it
Let others have their turn
And let go – this is courage.
I have learned so many wonderful lessons this past school year. After having the courage to step out and be involved, I was blessed with new friends and incredible experiences! Being a varsity member of the cross country team, a member of the art club, and a class representative student council taught me a lot about patience, perseverance, and working with others.
Looking forward, I'm excited for a summer break of traveling and rest before I join my dad's campus ministry team during senior year. It will take courage to be a leader of retreats as well as the school as a whole, so I pray for a fresh and deeper outpouring of fortitude this Pentecost.
Thank you for your support & prayers. Be assured of my prayers for all of you!
