Ever since Coryn was born we've had a joint birthday party for the two oldest girls in August. This year was the same, but a little different. Instead of a pot-luck picnic with extended family, Jo and Co each invited 6 friends to a backyard party on a Saturday afternoon. And instead of the usual picnic fare, the girls decided they wanted brunch food. We made cheesey scrambled eggs, waffles topped with whipped cream, and fresh strawberries and grapes on the side.
After the kiddos had their fill we headed out to the backyard to play a few games. They split into two teams to compete in a few rounds of 500, Twister, and a made-up-on-the-spot toss-a-ball-inside-a-hoop game. Most of the kids participated, but the thrill of running or rolling down the hill was too tempting to resist. Then we rounded up the troops to crack open a Treasure Chest piƱata. Next year we'll have to remember not to hang it in the sun. The tootsie pops were ok, but the golden nugget rollos and three musketeer minis were a melty mess.
After the kids filled their loot bags, we went back inside to sing Happy Birthday and eat ice cream cake. The game time ran over, so we didn't have time for the girls to open their gifts before the parents arrived to pick up the friends. In the invitation we had requested either a homemade gift or a coin for their bunny bank. Over the next few days Jo and Co had a ball opening the gifts, each one special and unique. Handmade cards, hair clips, jewelry, sun catchers, pencil cases, keychains, one dollar coins, a snow globe and a coloring book are new treasures at our house.
