Summer Farewell at Red Rock Pond

Saturday of Labor Day weekend we drove up to Red Rock Pond for one last camping trip of the summer. It was sunny and hot when we pulled up so we jumped right in the cool water. That night Pop Pop made steak and camp potatoes on the grill. After dinner we sat around a campfire. After Jo spied the first flicker of a star in the twilight sky, Pop Pop made popcorn on the cook stove. That first night Mallory slept in the trailer with the grandparents while the four of us slept by the pond in our tent. During the pre-dawn hours we were awakened by drops of rain on our face, so Matt and I scooted out of our sleeping bags to quickly set up the rain fly.

Sunday morning we went to mass in town and picked up cinnamon rolls for a post-church treat. After lunch Grammy stayed back with Mallory while the rest of us launched the boat at Mary Lake. Jo had a problem with the lifevest we had in the boat, so Pop Pop took her back to camp to pick out an alternate. While they were gone Matt steered the boat to give Coryn and I a tour of the lake.

Pop Pop knew the prime fishing spots for our little fisherladies. The instant the girls' hook dropped in the water there were half a dozen fish fighting over a taste of the night crawler. We caught over 20 fish in just over a couple hours. We tried to bring our catch over to Red Rock Pond with the hope of rejuvenating the fish population. That night Matt built the campfire and we roasted marshmallows for s'mores.

Monday was cool, so we played card games inside the pole barn and Pop Pop took the girls for a ride in the dump truck. Before packing up for home we tried to get a picture of the three sisters in our favorite orange chair. Mallory wasn't feeling it.
