Autumn is here

The overnight temps are consistently below 50 degrees. The neighbor's maple tree is blaze orange and radiant red. The morning slipper-shuffle to the breakfast table and a crackling fire in the family room are familiar sounds again. Autumn is in full swing.

We had planned to head up to the cabin for an extended weekend. Unfortunately our timing was off. A work crew is currently removing log rot and reinforcing the exterior.

Probably for the best, since Mallory's been fighting a cold all week AND cutting her top teeth. She isn't her normal cheery self. Still, Jo and Cokes were oh-so-bummed about our change of plans.

To soften the blow, we took a drive to The Mineshaft in Hartford for pizza, sprecher root beer and games on Thursday night. Friday I picked up the girls from school before lunch. Back at home Sophia Rae was waiting for us. The girls ate leftover pizza, read books, snuggled down for naps and woke ready to play. She's like the missing sister.

Today we had hoped to go on some kind of family outing but its cold and rainy. Matt made waffles for breakfast. Mallory is taking her morning nap and the older two are quietly playing in the living room.

Rainy days are movie days at this house. We'll have to agree on a movie to watch. Then pile onto the couch with blankets and bowls of popcorn. Maybe we'll end the day with roasting marshmallows in front of the fireplace.
