When my mom and I came to visit her with some other missionaries, she greeted us by saying, "I lost my cane, so I'm using my broom instead!"
And we came in to find that she was using a broom instead of her cane!
When we came in she playfully spanked Clare, a missionary who had come to see her before, and told Clare it had been too long since she had last visited.
Doña invited us into her kitchen and started telling us stories. She has a nephew who is diabetic and had to have both his legs cut off. It really surprised me how open she was to people she had just met!
Although I couldn't understand half of what she was saying, I felt like I could understand her in some way. And the way she smiled and laughed when we showed her the gifts we had brought: coffee, sugar, salt, oil, flour, and pasta, it made me so happy to see her so happy.
She brought us into her living room and started chatting away once more. She didn't have any children of her own, but her sister had so many that she received some, as Mexican tradition goes.
Doña's faith and joy in God was incredible and so inspiring. You never know how much you can learn from an old lady.
