One morning, not too
long before Anna and the Quinns left L’Asile, Anna invited us to come hike up
the mountain to see caves nearby. Reynold, our Haitian friend who delivers
water to the missionaries, had taken her to see the caves last year.
Jojo, my
mom, Mallory, Gloria, Daniel, Armando, Eliza Quinn and I went with Anna. About
half-way there, we saw Reynold, who asked us where we were going. When we told
him, he said he would come too. So, we waited for him by his house for five
minutes. When he came out, he and his daughter Chamaelle, led us the rest of the
way to the caves.
What we had thought would be a thirty-minute walk turned out
to be two times longer! An hour and a half of hiking up the steep mountain face
and jumping over cacti, we made it to the caves.
The first cave was tall, but
not very deep underground. There were so many bats! You could hear them
screeching and the flap of their wings as they flew across the cave. Eliza was
scared and held onto Anna’s hand. Turns out she does NOT like bats. The cave
probably went much farther and deeper, but we stayed in the main cavern. The
coolest part was that there were tree roots that had grown through the roof of
the cave, almost touching the floor!
Then we went to the other cave this one
Was much harder to get into. It had a low entrance and a deeper drop. To get in
you had to lower yourself in and slide to get into the main cavern. Anna said
she would stay outside with Daniel because she had already been in there.
Reynold showed us how to get around the cave, this one had many outreaching
rocks and it was harder to get to the cave floor. He helped the little girls
and made sure everyone else was safe. We wandered a little into the other
caverns but then mom said it was time to go.
When we emerged, the sun seemed
very bright! The walk back was very hot, with Anna and Armando taking turns
carrying Daniel. When we crossed the river into town, we were all so refreshed!
It was worth the long walk if we ever go again. The caves were so cool!
(Temperature wise and amazing!)

What a fun (though long) trip! Hopefully you can go there next time better prepared and enjoy the cool moments longer!
