Josephine was baptized. Tonight we will light her baptism candle to remember and celebrate her baptism day.
This morning Mallory, Gloria and I were dressed and out the door before 8am to attend the school mass. Josephine's class was in charge of the mass this week. Her classmates volunteered to bring up the gifts, read the petitions and ring the handbells. Josephine and her classmate Lola signed up to read the First Reading.
Over the weekend Jo practiced the reading. It came from the Book of Proverbs, the standard version, not a Children's Bible translation:
Like a stream is the king's heart in the hand of the Lord;
wherever it pleases him, he directs it.
All the ways of a man may be right in his own eyes,
but it is the Lord who proves hearts.
To do what is right and just
is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.
Haughty eyes and a proud heart-
the tillage of the wicked is sin.
The plans of the diligent are sure of profit,
but all rash haste leads certainly to poverty.
Last year Jo had practiced a different reading for a school mass. She read it well at home. But when it came time for her to walk up to the podium she shook her head and signaled for the middle school student to pinch hit. Afterward Jo told me she was afraid to stand alone in front of everyone.
This morning Jo and her classmate stood side by side together on a step stool to read into the microphone. Her classmate had forgotten her glasses, so after Jo finished her part she followed along, ready to whisper a word to Lola if she couldn't quite make it out. Both third graders read the reading with ease and without a hitch.

Jo certainly has grown much in a year's time. I love that you guys continue the tradition of lighting the baptismal candle together. Thank you for sharing these powerful moments of God working within your family.
